On February 14, Grant Soderholm was traveling before sunrise with family on a day trip to New York City, when a car in front of them swerved off the road at high speed, going airborne and violently crashing into a telephone pole. While his sister called 911, Grant and his brother-in-law sprung into immediate action, responding to the incapacitated driver. While his brother-in-law responded through the now missing driver’s window, Grant entered the vehicle through where the windshield used to be to access the passenger side of the car. Grant identified that the driver was unconscious and bleeding heavily from a bad head wound. Grant removed his hoodie and used it to apply pressure to the wound as well as hold the man still, concerned he may have a spinal injury. When EMTs arrived they had Grant help apply the neck stabilizer while continuing to hold pressure on the head wound.
Grant’s selfless and courageous actions helped to save a man’s life and exhibit the values and ideals of Blue Devil Pride. In special recognition, he is receiving our highest honor, the Blue Devil Pride Challenge Coin.
