Superintendent giving award to teacher with student and Principal

This week, Culpeper County Public Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Tony Brads presented Mrs. Beth Lane with the CCPS Spotlight recognition. Lane, a teacher at Culpeper County High School, received this recognition due to her heroic and potentially lifesaving actions on her way to school earlier this year.

On August 21, 2023, a gentleman was out on his daily walk on Griffinsburg Road. On his way back to his home, he passed out and landed face first onto the driveway of a neighbor’s house.  At the same time Lane and her children were driving on that road on their way to school.  They noticed what they thought was a pile of “something” or maybe a child playing alone in the driveway.  As they passed, they felt that something was odd about the situation, so they decided to turn around and go back.

When they got there, they saw the man down on the driveway and he was severely injured.  Her 16-year-old, CCHS junior, Maddox, ran to the house to get help.  He dialed 911 and collected towels from the house to help with compression on the injuries.  The family at the house came down the driveway to help. Lane and her children stayed with the man until the ambulance arrived, then she proceeded to take her children to school and to go to work herself.   While they did not know it when they stopped, they quickly learned that the injured man, who has since recovered from his injuries, was Charles Oliver, retired Principal of A. G. Richardson.

Her nomination for the CCPS Spotlight included the following statement:

Mrs. Lane has always been a great educator and role model in our school system, but she and her son’s demonstration of doing the right thing probably saved Charles’ life.   Kuddos for Mrs. Lane showing the type of characteristics we want to see in one of our employees, a good Samaritan in action.

Thank you, Beth Lane, for going above and beyond in service to the community.
