Last week in art class, Kindergartners used paint sticks and tempera paint to make their own “Elmers”, inspired by the story Elmer the Elephant!
Mrs. Gomez's kindergarteners have been constructing shapes out of everyday materials like popsicle sticks, string, and toothpicks. They are learning to make squares, rectangles, circles and triangles.
Mrs. Jenkins' class used what they knew to solve puzzles in Mrs. Dugger's class to "breakout" during a Matter Breakout this week.
Mr. Koch's class is using digit cards to practice place value and reading large numbers.
Mrs. Murdock's 5th graders are simulating the process of developing a cutting edge healthy snack. First, they discussed how important it is to create a product that will appeal to many people. After considering a handful of ideas, the agencies decide on a snack that
will surely earn them lots of money! Students also considered how color psychology impacts the buyer when planning their ad campaigns. In October, we'll find out which group's product and marketing earn them the most "money."
Mrs. Houston's third graders have been working on Place Value in Math. To finish out the unit they each made a donut with the sprinkles made out of their 4 digit number in model form. But, the fun didn't stop there! They reviewed graphing by making a whole class graph about their favorite type of donut. For snack they got to eat a donut and listen to the story "Arnie the Doughnut." Donut you love place value?

Miss Mahokey's class works hard each day to earn handfuls of marbles to fill their class marble jar. When they fill the jar, they earn a whole class reward! Last week their reward was to spend some time with Mrs. Dugger in the STEM lab! They got to show off their knowledge of the scientific method and work collaboratively to stack cups using only string and rubber bands! They had so much fun! Thanks Mrs. Dugger for helping to reward some awesome Stallions!
In Ms. Rozwadowski's ESL classes, students are learning about heritage, our inherited culture and traditions, while working on a collaborative mural to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The theme is "We are all connected," "Todos estamos conectados."
Mrs. Silver’s class has been busy getting adjusted to another new year. We have practiced lining up on our numbers, learning each other’s names , greeting our friends, and learning our ABC’s and 123’s.
Students have been learning about book care in the library before their first library book checkout. Ms. Zuna showed the students the "Book Hospital" where damaged books go that can't be repaired. Some of the damaged books that the students saw have mold from water, spilled milk, syrup spills, chewed pages, and many books with crayon, pen, and scissor cut pages and rips from younger siblings.
Ms Zuna taught students to keep water bottles in a side pocket outside of their backpacks to prevent spills. They discussed keeping books in a safe place at home like a bookshelf, or backpack. They discussed the importance of one of our Yowell school rules, "being responsible" , and taking care of our things.
Before checking out their first book, all students say, "the book care pledge," promising to do their best to take care of their books. If there is a "book accident", students are encouraged to bring it to the library for repair, if possible.
We are looking forward to checking out and reading many wonderful books this year!!
Ms. Butterfield’s Kindergarten Class had a special guest reader on Friday. Mrs. Bopp’s mom stopped by to share some great stories with the class. Math time has been filled with learning how to count, write and identify numbers 0-10 and learning all about the calendar. Ms. Butterfield’s class was excited to wish everyone a happy Friday last week!
Mrs. Hook’s class is having fun with phonics! Using mirrors, they are learning what their mouths should look like when saying different letter sounds. It has been a great start to Kindergarten!
Mrs. Simms' class is learning about magnetism in science and practiced with like and opposite magnetic poles today using Kinect It magnets!
Mrs. Settle and her students have been spending a lot of time building up a positive classroom community to help make sure that school is a place they're happy to be at. They are really focusing on celebrating both the things that make us similar and different to our peers. Some students enjoy building new STEM bin creations together. Others enjoy collaborating with their classmates, each using their own strengths as authors or illustrators to make a new book. Some enjoy dancing to the music on the Friday announcements! Whether it’s during free time, math, or reading, they're learning lots and having fun while doing it!
Student in Ms. Heaney’s fourth grade class are exploring Scientific Investigations. They practiced using their five senses to write observations about a class favorite: lollipops. Yum!
Mrs. Yost's class has started the year off great! In science they started by studying scientific investigations. First they collaborated by "saving Fred" with a simple experiment, and then went a little deeper with an experiment discovering which solution cleans a penny best! They've also spent time building relationships and creating a class family.
